Why New Zealand specifically: it sits just west of the International Date Line and runs on New Zealand Daylight Time in November — UTC+13, one of the furthest-ahead time zones anywhere that actually has a meaningful population and an active game storefront. When a release goes out "at midnight local time, region by region," whichever inhabited time zone is furthest ahead of UTC gets there first. That's New Zealand, not by luck but by geography.
